SPEECH & LANGUAGE MILESTONES

The course of children’s development is mapped using a chart of developmental milestones. These milestones are behaviours that emerge over time, forming the building blocks for growth and continued learning. We have broken them down into age categories.

• Uses the sounds /b/, /p/ and /m/ when speaking.

• Starts to smile when spoken to.

• Coo’s, gurgles and makes sounds.

• Listen when spoken too.

• Responds to his/her name.

• Use sounds to indicate needs and wants.

• Turns head when he/she hears sounds.

• Understanding simple instructions.

• Has a vocabulary if 1-3 words.

• Understands the meaning of hot and cold

• Use many different sounds when babbling.

• Respond to simple requests

• Will imitate clicks, coughs, and hisses.

• Start using speech in order to communicate.

• Responds to his/her name.

• Stranger may understand 25-50% of what he/she may be saying.

• Is able to answer “What’s that?” questions

• Name 5 body parts.

• Enjoys stories.

• Is able to name a few objects correctly.

• Understands 500-900 or more words.

• Uses 50-250 or more words.

• Is able to identify several body parts.

• Is able to point to pictures in a book when named.

• Ask questions that are 1-2 words in length.

• Is able to use 3-4 words in a phrase.

• Strangers are able to understand 50-75% of his/her speech

• Understands 2 800 words or more.

• Use 900- 2 000 words.

• Use sentences of 4-8 words.

• Is able to count to 10 by rote.

• Identifies 1-3 colours.

• A stranger is able to fully understand him/her.

• Is able to tell a story with complete accuracy.
